Kinesins are a family of molecular motors that move along the surface of microtubule filaments or cause them to become unstable using the energy from ATP hydrolysis. In humans, there are 45 kinesin proteins spread across 14 different subclasses of the kinesin motor protein family. It has been established that many of these proteins—or their orthologues—have crucial roles to play in both the mitotic and meiotic cell cycles. Based on where their motor domains are located, kinesins can also be divided into three groups: internal, C-terminal, and N-terminal kinesins. Traditional kinesin moves in a coordinated, hand-over-hand manner along a microtubule protofilament, acting as a dimer.
Kinesins play critical roles in the progression of the cell cycle, cytokinesis, spindle formation, microtubule dynamics, and chromosome segregation. Kinesins typically play roles in diseases involving pathogen transport, pathogen transport defects, or cell division.
