Na+K+ ATPase

Na+K+ ATPase

All higher eukaryotes contain a transmembrane protein complex called Na+/K+ ATPase, which serves as a vital energy-intensive pump that keeps ionic and osmotic balance in cells. Na+/K+ ATPase is a newly discovered cancer target that needs more research.

For re-establishing and maintaining this gradient, the Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA, or Na+ pump) must always be active. The main NKA isoforms in cardiac and vascular smooth muscle are isoforms 1 and 2, and their physiological roles are regulated by both their distinct subcellular distribution and their individual and independent signaling pathways.
