CETP

CETP

Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a plasma glycoprotein that facilitates the transfer of cholesteryl esters from atheroprotective high density lipoprotein (HDL) to proatherogenic low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL), resulting in lower levels of HDL but higher levels of proatherogenic LDL and VLDL. A class of medications known as CETP inhibitors targets the CETP enzyme to significantly raise serum HDL-C and lower LDL-C levels. An option for treating dyslipidemia is thought to be CETP inhibition.
Both alternative splicing and single-base polymorphisms can affect the level of CETP activity. There have been reports linking various common CETP variants to changes in plasma lipid levels, CAD risk, and/or CETP mass/activity. The phenotypic variation of HDL-C in the general population is also influenced by the uncommon genetic variations in the CETP gene.
