NFAT

NFAT

A family of Ca2+/calcineurin-dependent transcription factors known as nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) proteins was first discovered as an inducible nuclear factor that could bind the interleukin-2 (IL-2) promoter in activated T cells. However, it was discovered that the NFAT family proteins were expressed outside of T cells after all of them had been isolated and molecularly characterized. In a variety of organs, including the central nervous system, blood vessels, heart, kidney, bone, skeletal muscle, and haematopoietic stem cells, recent research has revealed new regulatory roles for NFAT proteins. For instance, the vessel wall cells exhibit a variety of Ca2+ signaling modalities that can alter during disease. Potential regulators of vascular pathogenesis are NFAT proteins, which can decode and translate these signals into alterations in gene expression.
