Adenosine Deaminase

Adenosine Deaminase

Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is an enzyme of the purine metabolism that catalyzes the irreversible deamination of adenosine and deoxyadenosine to inosine and deoxyinosine, respectively. It has been discovered that a wide range of microorganisms, plants, and invertebrates all contain this universal enzyme. Additionally, it is found in every mammalian cell and is essential for the development of the lymphoid system. Humans have two different adenosine deaminases, called ADA1 and ADA2. A severe combined immunodeficiency is caused by inherited mutations in ADA1, which play a significant role in lymphocyte function. The novel family of adenosine deaminase growth factors (ADGFs), which are crucial for tissue development, includes ADA2.

ADA is important in a number of diseases. It's interesting to note that diseases can arise from both genetic ADA deficiency and ADA overexpression. The idea that inherited genetic ADA deficiency accounts for 15% of all cases of severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID) and is the primary cause of SCID is widely accepted. On the other hand, hemolytic anemia, liver cancer, breast cancer, etc. may all have a close connection to ADA overexpression.
