HCN Channel

HCN Channel

A family of non-selective, single pore-loop, hyperpolarization-activated, six transmembrane domain, hyperpolarization- and cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) cation channels. There are four individuals in the HCN family (HCN1-4). I(h), a hyperpolarization-activated current best known for regulating heart rate as well as the resting membrane potential and excitability of neurons, has molecular correlates in HCN channels.

Among vertebrate voltage-gated ion channels, HCN channels are distinctive in that they have a reverse voltage dependence that causes activation upon hyperpolarization. HCN channels are widely expressed throughout the heart and central nervous system and are encoded by four genes (HCN1-4).
