MELK

MELK

Maternal embryonic leucine zipper kinase, or MELK, is a member of the CAMK superfamily of serine/threonine protein kinases. A protein serine/threonine kinase called Melk is most active during the mitotic process. It participates in a number of processes, including the cell cycle, cytokinesis, mRNA splicing, and apoptosis. Expression Cells from various tissue origins express MELK.The cell cycle has a significant impact on MELK expression because cells that have completed the cell cycle do not express MELK. Although MELK's precise role is currently unknown, it has been demonstrated that it plays a role in cytokinesis, apoptosis, and the Bcl-2 family of proapoptotic genes as well as apoptosis signal-regulating kinase (ASK1) and the inhibition of mRNA splicing during mitosis as a result of its association with NIPP1. In vivo mammary tumorigenesis requires MELK function.
