By making blood vessels tighten, the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) indirectly raises blood pressure. Angiotensin I is changed by ACE into angiotensin II, which tightens the blood vessels. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which controls blood pressure by regulating the volume of fluids in the body, is made up of ACE, angiotensin I, and angiotensin II. By inhibiting ACE (using ACE inhibitors), angiotensin II production and bradykinin metabolism are reduced, which causes a systematic dilation of the arteries and veins and a reduction in arterial blood pressure.
