ATP Synthase

ATP Synthase

A group of enzymes known as ATPases catalyze the breakdown of ATP into ADP and a free phosphate ion. Dephosphorylation releases energy, which the enzyme (typically) uses to fuel additional chemical reactions that would not otherwise take place. Some of these enzymes move solutes across the membrane against their concentration gradient because they are essential membrane proteins. Transmembrane ATPases are what these are. Many of the metabolites required for cell metabolism are imported by transmembrane ATPases, while toxins, waste products, and other solutes that may obstruct cellular processes are exported. For instance, the hydrogen potassium ATPase (also known as the gastric proton pump) and the sodium-potassium exchanger (also known as the Na+/K+ ATPase) are responsible for acidifying the stomach's contents.
