Adiponectin is a protein which in humans is encoded by the ADIPOQ gene. Both the breakdown of fatty acids and glucose levels are regulated by it. The hormone helps to suppress the metabolic disturbances that can lead to type 2 diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and act as a standalone risk factor for metabolic syndrome. Numerous receptors bind to adiponectin. Adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 have been identified as two receptors with homology to G protein-coupled receptors and one receptor similar to the cadherin family.
