Gli

Gli

Gli proteins, which are the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling's effectors, have been found to be important for cell proliferation, patterning, and cell fate determination in many different cell types and the majority of organs during embryonic development. The Gli transcription factors interact with the transcription complex and bind to Gli responsive genes to activate or inhibit transcription. The DNA-binding zinc finger domains of the Gli transcription factors bind to consensus sequences on their target genes to either start or stop transcription. Its function as a transcription factor was demonstrated by research that revealed the effect of the protein was inhibited when the Gli zinc finger domain was altered. The 18-amino acid activation domain of the -helical herpes simplex viral protein 16 is strikingly similar to the region found in gli proteins.
