Antibiotic

Antibiotic

The secondary metabolites known as antibiotics are produced by various microorganisms, animals, and plants. Some of them have a wide range of structural classes, including -lactams, macrolides, and polyether, that exhibit anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anthelmintic, anti-tumor, or immunosuppressive activities. Streptomycetes, Penicillium, and marine organisms are important sources of antibiotics and produce a wide range of polyketide compounds, including the well-known macrolide, polyene, and polyether antibiotics with a wide range of activities. Both human and veterinary diseases can be treated with antibiotics like penicillin, cephalosporin, streptomycin, and tetracycline. The global public health, however, is also increasingly at risk from antibiotic resistance.
