Elastase

Elastase is a group of serine proteases that include the macrophage elastase, the fibroblast elastase, the neutrophil elastase, and the pancreatic elastase.Elastase is able to break down extracellular matrix components like fibronectin, laminin, collagens III, IV, and VI, as well as proteoglycans in addition to the crucial connective tissue protein elastin.

The pancreas and phagocytes are the two main locations for mammalian elastases. There is a wide range of bacterial metallo and serine elastases among non-mammalian elastases. The catalytic efficiency of these proteinases is typically unrelated to the elastolytic activity, which varies from one elastase to another. Elastase inhibitors come in a variety of natural (protein) and artificial forms. Elastases are involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, cystic fibrosis, infections, and inflammation.
