Oxytocin Receptor

Oxytocin Receptor

The G-protein-coupled seven-transmembrane receptor superfamily includes the oxytocin receptor. Its primary physiological function is to control the smooth muscle contraction of the uterus during labor and the release of milk from the lactating breast. The binding of oxytocin and a related nonapeptide, vasopressin, causes the oxytocin receptors to become active. Multiple neuroendocrine and cognitive processes are regulated by the oxytocin receptor by Gi or Gq protein-mediated signaling cascades.

A nonapeptide belonging to the family of neurohypophyseal proteins, oxytocin specifically binds to the oxytocin receptor to trigger numerous central and peripheral physiological reactions. Oxytocin is a paracrine and/or autocrine mediator of a variety of biological effects in vivo. The interactions with G-protein-coupled oxytocin/vasopressin receptors, which, through Gq and Gi, stimulate phospholipase C-mediated hydrolysis of phosphoinositides, are the main mechanism by which these effects are exerted.
