Na+Ca2+ Exchanger

Na+Ca2+ Exchanger

Calcium is removed from cells by the antiporter membrane protein called Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (also known as sodium-calcium exchanger, or NCX). In exchange for the countertransport of calcium ions (Ca2+), it allows sodium (Na+) to flow across the plasma membrane along its electrochemical gradient, utilizing the energy that is stored there. A single calcium ion is removed by a Na+/Ca2+ exchanger in exchange for the import of three sodium ions.Animal species and a wide variety of cell types contain Na+/Ca2+ exchangers. One of the most significant cellular mechanisms for removing Ca2+ is the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger. The Na+/Ca2+ exchanger has a low affinity for Ca2+ but a high capacity, allowing it to move up to 5,000 Ca2+ ions per second while still transporting the ions quickly. After an excitotoxic insult, the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger probably has a significant impact on how quickly the cell's calcium concentrations return to normal.
