Thyroid hormone receptor is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily that shuttles between the cytosol and nucleus.Thyroid hormone (T3)-mediated biological activities are mediated by thyroid hormone receptors, ligand-dependent transcription factors. Two genes, one for TR and the other for TR, encode the primary isoforms of thyroid hormone receptors, including TR1, TR2, TR1, and TR2. The pleiotropic effects of the thyroid hormone (T3) on growth, development, and differentiation as well as the preservation of metabolic equilibrium are mediated by the thyroid hormone receptors.
Thyroid hormone receptors are zinc finger transcription factors belonging to the erbA superfamily that bind to DNA at particular response element sequences called TREs and trigger gene expression in response to thyroid hormone (T3). It has been demonstrated that thyroid hormone receptors can form monomers, homodimers, or heterodimers with the retinoid X receptor (RXR), another member of the erbA superfamily, to bind DNA.
